Letter From The President – May 2019

    Hello Housatonians,

The Region Conference is around the corner, literally. The conference is close by in Hartford, Connecticut. We have a commitment of two gold, one silver and seven bronze sponsors plus 21 exhibitors for the week ending event. The May 30th arrivals will have a chance to reconnect with our Region Chapter members. Friday, May 31st, will provide eight Continuing Education Sessions focusing on solutions for design, construction, materials and methods to combat cold weather challenges. Also on the agenda are five Professional Development / Leadership Sessions to advance your career and your organization.

The keynote presenter Rohan Freeman, engineer, mountaineer and adventurer will be presenting lessons learned from extreme challenges to your work and clients. Mr. Freeman has climbed his way to the top of many a challenge. We will all learn a little from the one and only Mark Twain (impersonator). He will be roaming the exhibit hall to enlighten us on observations from near and far.

For more on the entire conference be sure to follow the link:

The April meeting brought showers of questions from our moderator Ross Spiegel and the meeting attendees. The panel of experts provided the answers and shared their concerns in the specification writing process. Thanks to the presenters Craig Battisto from Amenta Emma Architects, Traci R. Hillebrecht from Architx, LLC, David Newman from JCJ Architecture and Mark Convertito from Perkins Eastman. Eli’s on Whitney provided a great location for the gathering. Now we know where the parking is, across Whitney Avenue in the public lot!

Our May chapter meeting will have a presentation by HDI on guardrail and handrail design. Is it a guard, a guardrail or a handrail? What does the code say about the three? Have your questions answered this month.

This is our 50th anniversary year. I hope to see our chapter members and guests at the June meeting.

See you in Milford then Hartford,
    Bill Selski, CSI, CDT, RA
    President, CSI Housatonic Chapter
